Montgomery Rural Heritage Byway Tour
Plan a day trip to explore rural Montgomery County using Heritage Montgomery’s iPod driving tour of the Agricultural Reserve as the perfect guide.
This 60-minute video podcast tour is divided into five chapters each showcasing a section of rural Montgomery County. Stories are presented through narrative, visual materials (photos, drawings, & written materials of the period) and music. The 61-mile scenic tour takes you along many of the county’s rural and rustic roads which lead to historic crossroads communities and along the C&O Canal. Activities relating to the Civil War figure prominently in many chapters. Historic images, coupled with contemporary shots, allow you to stand in the landscape today and imagine life long ago from the same vantage point.
The nature of a podcast tour allows you to control where you begin and when you pause—all the while enjoying the convenience of your own customized tour on your handheld video (iPod, Mp3) player. The Heritage Tourism Alliance of Montgomery County received the 2008 Educational Excellence Award from the Maryland Historical Trust for this self-directed tour, the first to use this format in any of the state heritage areas.
So plan a drive through rural Montgomery County and remember that – now more than ever – “you don’t have to go away to get away!”
